There are five pillars of historical importance in Conventional Medicine. A due regard for their gifts to us requires at the minimum a comment respecting the functional consequence of their teachings. The result is a historical framework that affords a texture to what is otherwise seen as an art that is detached from society and its patients. Hippocrates cultivated the art of clinical Observation and established its basis for the assessment of signs and symptoms. Galen took the teachings of Hippocrates and Disseminatedit throughout the medical community. Paracelsus identified and introduced Chemical Analysis as a complement to the physical analysis of medical assessment. Hahnemann applied the benefits of Experimentation to his practice of medicine and therefore systemised diagnostics with a scientific basis. Reckeweg is a Facilitator who applied to a systemised medical system a brilliant perception that has spawned a convergence of Homeopathy and Conventional Medicine. Dr. Hahnemann generates the defining perspective of Homeopathy as affecting the disease picture by removing its cause. Parenthetically this parallels the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which predates this discovery in western civilisation. Homeopathy is based on the principle of Similia, known as Similia similibus curentur; i.e., like cures like. Homeopathic medicine responds to the clinical picture or pattern directly as those same signs and symptoms are drug induced in a healthy person when ingesting the same remedy. Its benefits occur because the remedies stimulate the organisms defensive mechanisms, and what we refer to, as some aspect of the body's Chi in TCM. Homeopathy is based on the drug picture and its remedies are developed by observing the consequences of their ingestion by the healthy person, who is referred to as a prover. The remedies are highly diluted from a mother tincture; however, they retain with every dilution the energetic fingerprint of the mother tincture and with its presentation of resonance to an individual to thereby promote a sympathetic response by the Vital Force of the body. This observation is supported by the scientific work of Arndt and Schultz in whose name the Arndt-Schultz principle is established. The assertion is as follows: A weak stimulus tonifies or stimulates function A stronger stimulus sedates or relaxes function Enhanced stronger stimulus paralyses or suspends function In TCM we have been applying this same principle for centuries in all protocols. The guiding principle for choosing a remedy is the operative principle of Similia. The diseased pattern is relieved by removing its cause by means of stimulating the inherent intelligence of the body and applying it in accordance with the Arndt-Schultz Rule. The Florida College of Integrative Medicine is unique in that we demonstrate the integrated overview of the concepts of TCM with other paradigms and therefore create physicians with an understanding of how to integrate medicine appropriately because the construct of TCM is the broad conceptual umbrella over all other paradigms whose medicines have assimilated integration. -dr. isali ben-jacob
